Metal frame chairs are very popular because they attract attention with the practicality, durability and variety of models. They do not lose their original appearance, are designed for high loads and look great in various interiors.
Features
Metal chairs are characterized by versatility and practicality. They include three main elements: frame, seat and backrest. Some models can only consist of a frame and a seat. Modern manufacturers use steel pipes or aluminum castings to create frames. Steel pipe is characterized by high quality and affordable cost. The average thickness of such a pipe can vary from 1.5 to 2.5 cm, the shape can be round or square with the presence of sharp or smooth corners. An aluminum base is more expensive than a steel base, but is reliable. It is additionally covered with several layers of chrome or paint.
There are two options for mounting parts of a metal chair:
- The welding method is characterized by high quality joints. It is often used in the mass production of chairs.
- Fastening with nuts and bolts is quite reliable, but over time, you need to check their strength, since the nuts tend to loosen.
Modern manufacturers usually combine metal-framed chairs with other materials to create a soft and comfortable back and seat. The most popular materials for the design of the seat and back are textiles and leather. They are used to provide softness while using the chair. Some manufacturers use wood, plastic, polycarbonate or eco-leather for backrests. A number of manufacturers make the seat and backrest of plastic or natural wood.
Plastic options look great in various modern styles, often used as a bright interior accent. Classics lovers should pay attention to models that are made from natural wood. They look elegant and rich.
Chairs on a metal frame can be represented in various forms. The metal frame is made of a strong and reliable pipe of small diameter. Usually it is covered with several layers of chromium. To create bright models, the frame is often painted in the right color. A metal pipe can take various forms that attract attention with originality and unusualness. The frame of the chair can be supplemented with narrow metal tubes, which are used as decor. Bent tubes allow you to realize the most unexpected design ideas.
Metal frame chairs look beautiful in the interior of the kitchen and dining room. They can become a magnificent decoration of a bedroom, living room, children's room or study.
Models for the kitchen are usually equipped with built-in transformation mechanisms. Their presence provides the ability to adjust the backrest or seat height. All chairs on a metal frame are characterized by practicality: they are not afraid of mechanical damage, can withstand heavy loads, while the life of the product is not reduced.
Attractive design allows you to decorate the interior of the room, become an elegant addition or a spectacular accent. Such chairs are in demand when arranging restaurants and cafes.
Models on a metal frame do not require repair or replacement, since they are characterized by increased wear resistance. They are not afraid of various weather conditions, so they can be purchased for use on the street, in the open.
Advantages and disadvantages of metal frame chairs
Chairs on a metal frame have many positive qualities:
- Strength and durability. Such products can last even several decades. In addition, due to the ability to withstand heavy loads, they are suitable for people with curvaceous or heavy body mass, and that is why they are most often installed in public places.
- Resistance to various external influences. Metal chairs perfectly tolerate mechanical damage, high temperature, excessive humidity. They rarely corrode, so structures can be safely installed even in the garden.
- The design can be easily repaired even at home. At any time it will be possible to replace a boring seat or even a backrest, while you can leave the same metal frame, painting it if necessary.
- Plastic. The metal can be given any shape, which does not affect its strength. Therefore, there are dozens of design options for such furniture.
Chairs with a metal frame can have the most unusual shapes.
Metal frame chairs are easy to clean
Of the shortcomings, only the large weight of the structure can be noted, which can make it difficult to move around the room. Nevertheless, for most people, this feature is not a minus, so if you do not plan frequent permutations, then you can safely choose this option.
An important point! Not all designs have a large mass - some frames are hollow inside, and therefore light.
The hollow tube frame will be lightweight
Another drawback of certain types of metal is the likelihood of corrosion - a protective coating will help prevent this problem. In addition, it is better if there are special nozzles on the legs of the chair. Otherwise, the structure will damage the floor.
What are the chairs on the metal frame?

In appearance, such models are not much different from wooden chairs. There are still four legs, a seat and a back. However, the design will be more durable due to the reliable frame. | |
Since the metal has good ductility, various designs can be made from it. It can be any bent parts, rings, etc. | |
These are more massive products that are comfortable. Such chairs have a soft seat (sometimes a back), as well as armrests. Thanks to these features, the furniture looks more respectable, but it should be borne in mind that such chairs will take up more free space than standard options. | |
Bar stools can also have a different look: · The most simple and concise product is a stool. It will not be very comfortable to sit on it for several hours in a row, because there is no back. · A chair with a back is already comfortable. Its height may be different. · The most comfortable option is a bar chair with a high back. Typically, such chairs still have an additional footrest below. | |
Designers create all kinds of sketches for chairs, which are then made of metal, resulting in a rather extravagant product. Due to the complexity of the design and original design, the cost of such furniture is high, but the likelihood of meeting someone else’s is tending to zero. |
Equipment for the production of metal frame chairs
Only professional equipment is used in production:
- Band saw - for cutting pipes and profiles,
- Crosscut - for chamfering and deburring pipe ends.
- Pipe bending machine - for bending pipes at any angle,
- Vertical drilling machine - for drilling holes in pipes,
- Welding - for connecting parts.
- Straight grinder - for surface treatment after welding.

Frame: manufacturing features
Frameworks for chairs are made of various metals, with proper processing they withstand any negative impact. The most commonly used varieties are:
- Aluminum. This material is lightweight, so it is mainly used to create small parts. The main advantage of aluminum is that it has excellent resistance to high humidity and corrosion. However, aluminum is not the most durable metal, it certainly will not withstand too much weight.
- Steel. It is already possible to make large products from such metal, which should turn out to be as durable as possible. Without processing, the steel corrodes, so the material must either be coated with the appropriate finishing paints or varnishes, or be stainless.
- Cast iron. This is a very strong metal, the main drawback of which is considered only too much weight. Therefore, it is mainly used to make garden furniture, which does not have to be regularly moved. In the absence of processing, the products also corrode. In addition, cast iron is not the best material for self-made chair.
The chair with aluminum frame does not have to be further processed
The following methods of joining parts of the structure exist:
- Welding. This is a very reliable way of fixing parts, when using which the master will need to mask the welded joints. In addition, for work it is necessary to have special equipment and skills to work with it.
- Bent elements. You can make the frame of a metal chair from only one plastic pipe. In this case, no fasteners will be required at all, but a special machine — a pipe bender — will be required.
- Bolts. It is in this way that parts of the metal frame are often connected (while all fasteners must remain on the inside). In addition, the bolts will have to be tightened periodically, because the nuts are often untwisted during the use of the chair.
By bending pipes, you can make a frame of any complexity
The frame can be solid or folding. The first option is the most common. These are standard chair designs that need a separate seat. The second option is compact chairs, which, if desired, can be easily folded, making them convenient to store. In addition, folding products are best suited for small apartments.

In order for the metal not to lose its normal appearance for a long time, it is necessary to use a special coating. The most popular ways to save a metal frame you can see below.
Table number 2. Common Metal Coating Methodsa.
Way | Description |
---|---|
Dyeing | On sale you can find a large number of enamels designed for metal structures. Such a coating has good resistance to many negative factors, including high temperature, humidity, so the design can be safely installed in the kitchen and even in the bathroom. The smooth surface has an excellent appearance after drying, and not only gives the furniture aesthetics, but also allows you to protect the material from corrosion. |
Spraying | In the manufacture of metal furniture, chromium and titanium sputtering is often used. Such coatings protect the metal from corrosion, have an attractive appearance and good resistance to damage. |
Etching | The processing principle is based on the fact that the structure is impregnated with special chemicals. This allows you to ensure that the metal changes its properties and ceases to "react" to humidity. |
Varnishing | The advantage of the coating is that there is a wide variety of finishing varnishes of all kinds of colors. Varnishing also protects the metal frame of the chair from rust, but only if the layer is updated from time to time. |

Seat and backrest: manufacturing features
Completely metal chairs are not comfortable, they are usually used at train stations, airports, hospitals and other places where a large flow of people passes daily. Household products should be more convenient, therefore, a back and a seat of another material are placed on the metal frame.
Depending on the purpose of the chairs, the materials for making the seat and backrest also use different ones, they differ in strength, resistance to wear and cost.
Table number 3. Materials for the manufacture of seats and backs.

Plastic is often used to make the seat and back of a metal chair. This material is not demanding in care, it is not afraid of high temperatures and humidity. The main advantage is considered a wide variety of colors of plastic, so there will be the opportunity to create a product that is suitable for both the apartment and the cottage. In the case of making constructions with their own hands, they use polycarbonate panels - this is a very durable material compared to ordinary plastic and it is quite simple to work with it. Such chairs can support a weight of about two hundred kilograms. | |
The combination of such a material with a metal frame is very common, because the tree is also strong, durable, it is easy to work with it even at home. The result is nice furniture that can be complemented with soft pillows to sit more comfortably. | |
This is a natural, environmentally friendly material that does not require special care - it will be enough only to periodically wipe it with a cloth from dust. The main advantage is that the rattan can withstand severe frosts in the best way, so the structures can be safely installed in outdoor arbors. In addition, the material does not deform under the influence of humidity, so this furniture is suitable for the kitchen, bath area or sauna. In total, such a seat can last about ten years with daily use. | |
Of course, for the manufacture of furniture, and in particular chairs, do not use ordinary glass. In this case, you need a thick and very durable material - organic glass. Such glass is scratch resistant, it will be very difficult to break. |
For the upholstery of seats and backs, natural, artificial leather or textiles are often used. Each option has its obvious advantages.
For example, leather upholstery is more resistant to dirt, so this chair can be safely placed in the kitchen or in the nursery. Textile surfaces will have to be cleaned periodically, in which case it is recommended to use a steam generator.

Chairs on a metal frame for various styles
It is important to consider that any product should be combined with the general interior of the room, therefore it is recommended to study the features of the styles first, and only then choose one or another model for independent production.
Table No. 4. The most popular styles and their features.
Style | Description |
---|---|
Country | Since metal is rarely used in such interiors, it is recommended to combine structures with wood. The best solution is to cover the frame, seat, back with translucent varnish to give the finished chair a neutral appearance. In the country style, half-chairs with armrests, having a square shape, fit well. |
High tech | Under this interior design, chrome products are ideally suited in combination with a plastic seat and back (if desired, plastic can be replaced with plexiglass). In this case, you can use various bright colors, unusual shapes. |
Provence | Products with a soft back and a seat, rounded shapes are ideally suited for this style. The legs of such chairs can be both high and low, often there are armrests. All lines should be smooth, and metal should be painted white or beige. |
Modern | In this case, various openwork, forged frames are perfect. This style allows you to create or purchase the most fantasy models of chairs, and you can make an ensemble of several pieces of furniture of different shapes or colors. |
Vanguard | It is in such an interior that you can apply all kinds of designer designs. Standard forms are not acceptable here, it is recommended to use abstraction. By the same principle, it is necessary to choose a design for the seat and back. |

Making a chair on a metal frame with your own hands
A design on a metal frame can be made with your own hands, for this we need to prepare the following:
- profile pipes with a cross section of 20 × 20 millimeters,
- scissors for metal,
- eye protection glasses
- jigsaw
- elbow
- furniture stapler,
- unnecessary plywood sheet for making patterns,
- wooden blocks
- chipboard sheet (for seat and back),
- furniture foam rubber,
- leatherette,
- thick cardboard for stencil,
- simple pencil, ruler,
- fastenings.
Step-by-step instruction
Step 1. First of all, on the plywood sheet, it is necessary to mark out the location of the structural parts - this will avoid additional measurements. Further, according to the marking, it is necessary to fix wooden blocks on plywood, between which the details of our chair will be inserted - this will allow you to get the most even construction. Since some parts will be tilted, you should cut the pipe and bend it slightly to the side.
To ensure uniform construction, the pipes are clamped with bars
Step 2 Now you need to weld these parts together using a welding machine. According to the same principle, it should be fixed with bars, and then connected by welding and the other side of the chair.
Important - use the welding machine only outdoors
Step 3 At this stage, only the side walls are ready for us, now we should weld the cross members to them. To do this, fix them on both sides with clamps and attach the cross members. At this stage, you should achieve the most even angles, otherwise the design will turn out to be a curve.
An important point! In the process of working with the welding machine, it is also important to monitor the location of the pipes, because they can slightly rise or fall.
By the same principle, all the remaining parts should be connected, as a result of which we will get such blanks.
Step 4 Next, you only need to use a grinder to process all the welding joints so that they look more aesthetically pleasing. Now we have to go to the stage of creating a seat and back. First, we need to take a thick cardboard and display the seat and backrest on it.
As a stencil, you can use parts of a cardboard box
Step 5 The resulting stencils will need to be cut and attached to the frame. Here you will have the opportunity to adjust their size in order to eventually get the most suitable option. In order to make rounding at the edges, you can use a pair of compasses or any round object. As a result, we got a seat that will expand slightly from the front. In addition, square cutouts should be provided for the profile pipe. Now you need to transfer these stencils to a chipboard sheet and cut along the contour using a jigsaw.
Care should be taken at this stage, especially when cutting round corners.
Step 6 The resulting seat must be tried on a chair. In order that sharp corners do not tear the soft part of the future upholstery, they must be carefully sanded with sandpaper. Now it is necessary to cut the foam part by applying the seat and backrest from chipboard.
Cut the soft part of the foam
Step 7 The workpiece must be trimmed with scissors. At the same time, the edges of the sharp part should also be cut so that a beautiful seat shape is obtained under tension. Now you need to cut out a leather substitute, while leaving an additional few centimeters, which we will bend down. At this stage, you should cut the soft part according to the size of the back blank.
An important point! It is better to use chipboard without lamination in your work, but if you still have an old chipboard sheet, then it will work in our case too, you only have to remove (polish) the coating from the side where the brackets will be fixed.
Step 8 It is necessary to pull the material and fasten the staples alternately. It is important to fix them so that the material is as tight as possible to the surface, special attention will have to be paid to the corners. Now you need to fit the back with foam rubber and leatherette. Only here it is already necessary to sew a cover so that the back has a normal appearance on both sides. Before attaching the seat and back, you will need to paint the metal frame.
Before starting the painting, it is recommended to once again clean the surface with a grinder to remove all burrs and rust. Then it will already be possible to start staining.

Step 9 In this case, a special moisture-resistant enamel was used. The main advantage of such a coating is that it is allowed to be applied to a metal surface without a preliminary primer (even if there is already rust on the surface). Upon completion of the process, the structure should be left for a day so that it is thoroughly dried. In some cases, re-coating is required. When the frame is thoroughly dry, it is necessary to fix the seat and backrest using self-tapping screws.
The finished product will have the following form. The back we made of leatherette of a different color. The patching technique was used here as a decor. To do this, we applied gold spraying from a spray can to the surface of the black frame.
Video - An unusual chair made of metal and wood
There is a wide variety of models of durable chairs on a metal frame. Using ready-made schemes, you can cope with their manufacture at home. Nevertheless, if you do not have experience working with a welding machine, it is better to choose a different method of connecting parts of the structure or consult a professional.
